“s” or no “s” ?

We know that regular plurals in English are formed with an –s at the end of the word:
one pound ➞ two pounds

But look at these examples:

– The print costs ten pounds
but I only have  a twenty-pound note.

– The film lasts four hours with a fifteen-minute interval.

– We set off for a three-mile walk but we actually walked ten miles.

Why is the “s” missing?

Doit-on mettre un “s” ou non ?

– L’estampe coûte 10 livres mais je n’ai qu’un billet de 20 livres.

– Le film dure 4 heures avec un entracte de 15 minutes.

– On est parti pour une balade de 3 miles mais en fait, on en a fait 10 !

Nous savons que, normalement, on forme le pluriel d’un nom anglais en rajoutant /s/ (ou /-es/) à la fin. Mais il y a une particularité : si ce nom est utilisé comme un adjectif, il est invariable :

Ten pounds mais a ten-pound note.

Fifteen minutes mais a fifteen-minute interval.

Three miles mais a three-mile walk.

Remarquez aussi l’utilisation du trait pour unir les deux mots : ten pounds ➞ a ten-pound note.
